Dental Insurance. How Does It Work?
Dental insurance provides coverage to help pay for dental care. You generally pay a premium to have coverage.
The average cost of a preventive care dental insurance policy is $26 monthly. A comprehensive dental insurance plan costs an average of $47 per month.
What Does Dental Insurance Cover?
Dental insurance coverage typically covers three areas of dental care: preventive, basic, and major services.
- Preventive care usually covers exams, cleanings, X-rays, as well as fluoride treatment for patients 14 and younger.
- Basic services generally include fillings and deep cleanings.
- Major services cover everything else such crowns & bridges, extractions, gum surgery etc., which is where you usually find plan exclusions.
Dental insurance usually does not cover services like:
- Cosmetic dentistry including bonding or veneers
- Missing Tooth Clause – any restorative work to replace a missing tooth, if the tooth was missing before the policy was active
- Dental Implants
- Teeth Whitening
- Orthodontics (brackets and/or clear aligners) may be covered but have a once in a lifetime maximum benefit (check your policy for coverage details)
Let’s say you get $200 worth of dental services and haven’t paid anything toward a $50 deductible yet. In that case, you would pay the first $50, and then you and the dental insurance company would split the remaining $150. If you have a 50%/50% coinsurance, you would pay an additional $75 and your insurance company would pay $75.
That means your bill for that $200 worth of dental services would be $125 total. Plus, you are paying $26 to $47 per month for your Dental Insurance Premium. ($312 to $564 Annually)
How Dental Insurance Annual Coverage Maximums Work.
Assume your annual coverage maximum is $1,500 and imagine you have $3,000 worth of dental services performed within that plan year. You would be responsible for any costs that exceed the $1,500 until your next plan year.
In that case, you would be on the hook for the other $1,500 not paid by the insurance company. Plus, you are paying $26 to $47 per month for your Dental Insurance Premium. ($312 to $564 Annually)
As you can see, having dental insurance does help with the cost of dental care, but it might not help as much as you thought. We tell our patients to consider dental insurance as a “coupon” that helps reduced the cost of dental care by a specific amount.
